Franz Lehár is widely considered the leading operetta composer of the 20th century. His operettas included lush melodies, drama, light-hearted comedy, dance and lavish staging, and with their increasingly high musical caliber, his final works were closer to opera than to operetta.
His mega-hit, The Merry Widow (1905), enjoyed unprecedented success, spreading across the globe in record time. His rich musical legacy also includes operas, sonatas and other musical pieces.
The program will include fascinating personal stories and little known details of Lehár’s career, interwoven with his rich enduring music that continues to resonate in the hearts of audiences to this day.
Andrea Lázár has gained a wealth of knowledge of Hungarian music and composers over the 17 years of hosting the Hungarian program, making her the ideal person to share with us the life and music of this iconic composer as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of his birth.
